ABOUT
US:
Hoarse Raven Theatre (est. 1992), the producers of Vancouver's runaway hit, Tony n' Tina's Wedding (Jessie nominee), is an ambitious, small company operating without any government funding under the co-artistic direction of Michael Fera and Tanja Dixon-Warren. In January 2006 they secured the lease on the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Restaurant, which now operates as their primary performance venue renamed The Other Space.
Past productions include the world premiere of Alley Cats – the Musical (partnering with Megakins Theatrical Productions and starring Lea DeLaria and Rex Harrington), the 2003/04 and 2004/05 Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, the 2005 Making a Scene Conference for Theatre Professionals, the Canadian premieres of Terrence McNally’s Corpus Christi, Brian Friel’s Molly Sweeney (Jessie nominee) and Alistair Elliot’s translation of Medea. Other productions include Angels in America Parts I & II , Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Jessie nominee), acclaimed actor Antony Holland in Sharing Shakespeare, Balthazaar and the Mojo Star (Jessie Nominee), The Belle of Amherst , three heads talking, Shakin’ Not Stirred, Macbeth, Stay Carl, Stay, and Teechers. A number of these productions enjoyed remounts and toured to several communities within British Columbia.
Hoarse Raven Theatre is thrilled to be producing the North American premiere of The Mother of All the Behans in their 2006 season. Their ongoing production, Tony n' Tina's Wedding celebrated its eleven year anniversary in July 2006 and has played to more than 600,000 patrons.
The company was formed to showcase the talents of theatre professionals who, due to the precarious employment situation of the arts, often need to "create their own work to have work." The company also aims to produce shows that entertain and appeal to a wide range of audiences while experimenting with different styles and genres.
Hoarse Raven Theatre is a member of the Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance, The Alliance for Arts & Culture, Tourism Vancouver and is a Supporting Member of PACT (Professional Association of Canadian Theatres). The company has received a number Jessie Richardson Theatre Award nominations and was awarded the prestigious Vancouver Board of Trade ‘Business and the Arts Award’. Co-Artistic Directors Tanja Dixon-Warren and Michael Fera were 1998 recipients of Business in Vancouver's 40 under 40 Award - naming them as two of the top business people in Vancouver under the age of 40.
Hoarse Raven takes its name from Lady Macbeth as she awaits the entrance of Duncan: "The raven himself is hoarse that croaks the fatal entrance..."
