From Britain's premiere playwright and originally written for the BBC, the Talking Heads series is a collection of comic monologues reflecting Alan Bennett's marvelously observant view of the British way of life. Two of these classics are presented here.

A Lady of Letters follows Irene Ruddock - passionate letter writer and concerned citizen - as she avidly campaigns to single handedly to clean up the moral decay of Great Britain.

Her Big Chance features Leslie, an ever optimistic aspiring actress, somewhat past her prime, but who truly embraces the adage "There are no small parts, only small actors!”

Both are touching, real and very very funny.

Under the direction of Michael Fera (Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, Tartuffe,  Hedwig and the Angry  Inch, Corpus Christi ) award winning actress Tanja Dixon-Warren  (Angels in America, Broken, Molly Sweeney, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The L Word, Supernatural) brings two of her very favorite roles to audiences throughout the province.

ENTERTAINING MR. SLOANE

Jericho Arts Centre, 1675 Discovery St.
March 5-20, 2010
$20/$15

Entertaining Mr Sloane is a hilarious no shame romp of filthy goings-on in British suburbia!

It may be Swinging 60s in London but, out in the suburbs and behind closed doors, Kath is feeling very middle-aged and very lonely. Craving love and affection, Kath and her bachelor brother decide to take in a lodger, the young and sexy Mr Sloane.  Soon, both become infatuated with the shady young tenant – and, to keep his affections, they are prepared to let him get away with anything – maybe even murder!!!\ Originally staged in 1964, Entertaining Mr Sloane was the first of Joe Orton’s plays to be produced in London’s West End. From then until his death in 1967 Orton had a brilliant success as a playwright.

Entertaining Mr. Sloane, like his other works (notably Loot and What the Butler Saw) is an outrageous and unconventional black comedy  that  continues to spark controversy with its mischievous peep at the hypocrisy behind the 1960’s  ‘new’ permissive society and that era’s fascination with sex.  Between 1964 and 1967, Joe Orton contributed to an exciting working class culture that swept through the nation.   He was the rising star of an ‘alternative British intelligentsia’, but his career was cut tragically short when he was beaten to death by his long term partner, Kenneth Halliwell, a less successful writer, who immediately afterward committed suicide.

Under the direction of Michael Fera (Salt Water Moon, Tony n‘ Tina’s Wedding, Soldiers Fortune, Tartuffe), Hoarse Raven Theatre presents Joe Orton’s Entertaining Mr. Sloane at the Jericho Arts Centre and featuring Jessie nominated actor, Tanja Dixon-Warren (Molly Sweeney, Kindertransport, Broken, Who’s Afraid  of Virginia Wolfe).
